Why Are Rats So Bad in Auckland This Year?

Why Are Rats So Bad in Auckland This Year?

Have you been experiencing Rats or Mice scratching and chewing in your walls, in the ceiling, behind the kitchen cabinet? These are all common symptoms of rodent visitors in Auckland homes. The most common complaint EcoSan Solutions receives from clients is strange and disconcerting noises coming from the ceiling or walls of the house – although Mice, Possums and Birds all enter and sometimes need assistance from pest controllers in Auckland with exiting the ceiling void, the vast majority of the time it is the roof rat also known as the black rat which is responsible for chewing scratching, tapping and walking noises in the ceiling and walls of residential buildings. Sometimes these ratty visitors are not immediately noticed especially in insulated ceilings and walls which can dampen the noises they make.

How common are rats in Auckland. The answer is easy, very common. Rats are all over Auckland, and every pest control operator will generally provide a rat control service and every operator worth his or her salt will have experience and stories about rats in Auckland homes and businesses also.

Rats have recently featured in a few different news stories highlighting the surge in numbers of Rats around Auckland homes. What is attributing this increase? Usually the answer to this question lays in the past weather conditions.  Rats and Mice do not increase in numbers spontaneously and they require some time with suitable conditions to build up numbers.

The weather conditions, mild enough so cold temperatures are not so low that it hampers breeding and sufficient but not too much rain. So the warmer autumn we experienced has helped many rodents survive and the same weather conditions foster natural nutrition available for rats and mice to eat and become big and strong and their young will survive. In ideal conditions such as these, rodents will live and eat better and will give birth to more pups.

Why do Rats want to live in your ceiling, subfloors, under your deck and in your pantry?

The simple answer is two factors. Shelter and Food. It may be one of these or preferably both. However most commonly it is shelter which brings Rats inside homes in Auckland. As winter approaches, the temperature drops a fair bit, and like us humans, Rats are warm blooded mammals, and they do appreciate a warm place to rest, hide and sleep and breed if suitable. Ceiling cavities are a great example of suitable shelter for Rats and also Mice, it is generally much warmer in the ceiling than outside in the garden or under the deck, it is dry and it is safe from predators such as cats, small dogs, other rat clans and humans – with the exception of EcoSan Pest Controllers, we know they are up there. Ceilings however do not provide much food for Rats if any at all and although Rats have keen odour detection ability and can easily smell the corn chips in the cupboards and the cat food on the kitchen floor, they generally stay inside the ceiling as they do tend to be shy of human interaction. However, if Rats are not controlled, they will become more familiar with the property and they will become more adventurous particularly if the opportunity presents itself.

Do Rats come inside the house or will they stay in the ceiling or the walls?

Roof rats AKA the Black Rat are agile climbers, very common in New Zealand and Auckland specifically; they are quite nimble and can scale trees and building cladding. This ability means they can source food outside in nature easily, so often seeking shelter is sufficient for the Roof Rat.

The Norway Rat however, is the black rats fat cousin. Often grey or light brownish colour, sometimes even featuring white and brownish marking, the Norway Rat can climb well, but it is a little lazier in this respect and not near as nimble as Ratty the roofer. The Norway Rat, also very common in Auckland, it is more of a ground dweller. This guy will burrow holes in the clay under your house, under the deck around the BBQ smells, or in the garden. This Rat is more likely to find itself inside your home, often spotted in the laundry, the kitchen pantry, or hiding behind inaccessible voids behind kitchen cabinets. It is shy of humans, and still fast when it needs to be, but it’s fatter and more sedate appearance makes the Norway rat appear more comfortable around Humans. Norway Rats, also like to venture into sewer systems and EcoSan Solutions have received a few calls from clients who would like to resolve the issue with the big fat rats coming up out of the toilet bowl. Yes this actually happens.

Norway Rats have also been observed nesting in the framing of couches in the lounge and in bed bases. On several occasions, we have seen nests in these areas where the Rats have been stealing cat or dog biscuits and taking them back to the nest inside the bed base or the couch. It is surprising how long a Rat can often nest in these areas unnoticed! Sometimes they just climb through a window and find a warm concealed place to stay, unbeknownst to the homes human occupants.  We have even seen this occur with households which have pet cats.

How do I keep rats out of the house?

Common solutions to controlling Rats in both residential and commercial properties in Auckland will revolve around basic methods.

Controlling the Rat population

Using trapping to immobilise rats and poison baits to kill and reduce the population and therefore reducing breeding ability.

Reducing feeding opportunities

Denying rat’s a source of nutrition helps to reduce the number of rats by reducing breeding. Less opportunity for feeding will by extension reduce opportunities to breed.

Obstruction to prevent rats entering buildings

Obstruction methods are effective at reducing rodent ingress risk. For buildings in the food chain industry, obstruction is essential and prevents Rats and Mice from entering the building where food products may be exposed to their activity. Rats and Mice defecate with excretion and urine with potential to contaminate products with far reaching consequences which can include disease and sickness but also building and equipment damage as rodents chew and contaminate equipment resulting in expensive repairs and maintenance. Rodents in these areas are unacceptable so obstruction is vital to controlling rat invasions. This method can also be employed in any building or residence to some degree for rodent control.

This can include steel mesh or rodent resistant fillers to seal and obstruct gaps. Brushing and trim to seal gaps under doors. Fillers, tapes or construction around drain pipes and plumbing and electrical ducting. And obstruction on plumbing from sewers to prevent rats entering the building via the sewers up the toilet bowl.

Sanitation of the environment

Some environments around the house or building may unintentionally foster rat activity.

Rats like to remain concealed and providing them places to hide will create a situation which is more attractive to Rats and Mice also.

Clutter around the building perimeter and more critically around the building footprint will provide rats shelter and hiding spots where they feel less exposed and more comfortable. The idea is to create environments where Rats feel the least amount of comfort possible making your living and working space as hostile for rats as possible.

Vegetation around the house or building can be a problem which can significantly increase the chances of rats entering the building.  Long grass, untamed gardens, fruit trees which have fruit laying on the ground whether this be feijoa trees or citrus trees, these are attractive to Rats and Mice and can signal the areas may be suitable for dwelling as it may provide not just shelter but also food close by. Fruit trees should remain maintained and dropping fruit should be regularly picked up to reduce attraction to rats.

Overhanging trees, especially tropical type trees which overhand the building roof edge are always a hot spot for rodent activity. Rats can very easily climb trees and jump from branches onto the roof and gain access to roof voids via the gaps behind the guttering. Almost all ceiling cavities in Auckland can be accessed by rats in this way and it is difficult and expensive to try obstruction methods to prevent this area of access. Since rats do like to climb trees as a natural habit, the next logical step is jumping on to the roof to get closer to warmth and the odour of food. The most inexpensive and practical action is to trim or lop trees overhanging the roof.

Rats are creatures of habit so break the cycle

Rats are creatures of habit and they don’t really like to reinvent the wheel. Rather than finding their own safe spot to rest, nest and feed, rats will use the strong sense of smell and will track down odours which indicate rats have previously visited specific areas. If other rats have been around a location, chances are, there is safety, shelter and food close by and rats will be encouraged and continue to investigate. For example, if Rats around the perimeter of the house can detect the odour of other rats which have previously entered the building’s roof, they will be emboldened to follow the scent.

Rats come back from the dead

Rats olfactory system is much more sensitive to that of humans. If rats have a history of visiting or nesting inside your ceiling cavity, under your deck or under your house, rats walking past your house or business in search of a lodging place will detect this odour and alike leaving the vacancy sign lit outside, this will act as an invitation.  In a sense, Rats come back from the dead, even after eradicating rats from the house, they almost always come back. Even rat odours years old can still be attractive to new comers.

This is why greater vigilance is recommended after having issues with rodents, as every visitor increases the chances of more rats moving in. The more rats frequently visit or stay around your property the more scent they leave behind. So acting promptly to eradicate rats is important.

The easiest way to keep rats out of the house

As previously mentioned, the easiest way to control Rats is to reduce the population numbers. In Auckland however, it is not feasible to suggest wiping out all the rats in your area. Rats have been studied and shown to travel hundreds of meters in search of lodging and food. Controlling all the rats in your suburb in Auckland or even your block is simply not going to happen anytime soon.

What can be done which has also be shown to be effective, is controlling the numbers on your property. Although Rats can travel hundreds of meters, really they prefer less walking so if you can control or eradicate rats around your property perimeter and then maintain this condition, then in this case usually this means the risk of rats entering inside the house is significantly reduced.

What is the most effective method, trapping or Poison baiting?

Both poison baiting and trapping have pros and cons. Here are the basic important ones.

Trapping when successful, immediately immobilises the target. Rats caught in a trap can no longer contaminate environments and food, eat produce, scare customers and family or chew wires or building materials.

Trapping has the advantage of seeing and the ability to confirm the kills which can be useful when auditing control effectiveness and provides comfort to home owner and staff.

Trapping does not require the use of poisons which some home owners may not be comfortable with using. Poison baits may also not be acceptable to use inside food chain operations meaning trapping is safer to avoid cross contamination of poisons.

Some downsides of trapping can be very wary and cautious rats and mice. These may have experienced traps or be too smart to succumb to certain devices. This may mean different methods may be required to control minority numbers of rat clans.

Box shyness can result with rats where they have entered a trap which has triggered but failed to kill. This rat will now be very wary of other types of traps and may even not consume poison baits hosted in bait stations meaning using a different method may still not control this now wise and experienced rat.

Inhumane harm can result with traps, cautious rats and mice may approach rat traps at an unintended angle or may be startled when triggered resulting in harm or not an immediate kill causing suffering.

This can be prevented with using specialised and humane approved devices which significantly reduce this occurrence.

Using poison baits is highly effective at controlling rodent populations.

Poison baits are a humane approach to controlling rats and mice. These products are designed to end the life of rats without causing significant discomfort to the target. Baits are more effective than trapping since it appeals to the need to eat which is required for survival and therefore irresistible but also there are no moving parts so rats can consume the poison baits without the risk of being scared off.

Poison baits used correctly can also control several rats between services and the devices used require less maintenance and less frequent servicing, keeping the cost of rat pest control to a minimum.

Baiting is considered more humane as there is little chance of the rats and mice been maimed by a failed kill device.

Rats which have not been controlled by poison baiting can still be successfully controlled using a kill trap as poison baiting does not have the propensity to cause box shyness – a hesitation to enter a pest control device due to fear.

Some people will be concerned about the risks posed to house pets and small children when using poison baits to control Rats and Mice. There are a couple of reasons why this is not the problem some feel it is.

Firstly, manufactures of poison baits are aware secondary or non-target poisoning is an issue which needs to be avoided. A few measures used to decrease the risk of this are bittering agents.  These are ingredients used which cause cats, dogs and small children to spit out poison baits if they are put in the mouth. Rats are less susceptible to these ingredients and will continue to swallow the bait undeterred.

Target food selections which attract Rats and Mice to consume the poison baits are not very tasty for cats and dogs and small children. They are savoury ingredients and they are not sweet, fatty, salty or meaty. Usually Pets even with big appetites and excellent noses generally are not attracted to these food sources. With the addition of bittering agents as an additional deterrence with accidental consumption, this makes the poison baits quite safe around pets and children.

There are some bait choices which do contain some odours like carob or chocolate smells which should be avoided in certain situations.

The mode of action of common poison baits used for rodent pest control in Auckland is a slow acting effect. Meaning even for a rat, which is much smaller than the average cat or dog, it can take several days to been killed by the effects of the active ingredient. The blue/green colour in bait blocks is there intentionally as an indicator of ingestion. This early warning safety measure is presented if a non-target does consume the bait blocks. Easy and common antidotes are available from vets if pets consume the products which will usually mean no harm will come to the cat or dog.

All Poison pest control blocks for rats and mice should be placed only in approved bait stations, preventing access by even small pets. It is for this reason that most recorded exposure events to rodent baits involving animals and children are likely the result of baits being used by the general public as opposed to professional use, since a professional pest controller, will have training and experience in the safe use of these products.

Do you need a more effective service to control rats on your property?

Has a pest control company been servicing your business, a rental or your home but the rats keep coming back or perhaps they didn’t leave at all? Or have you been installing your own bait stations or snap traps and you catch rats or feed them baits but it feels like you’re not staying on top of it?

EcoSan Solutions have experienced and trained staff, with access to various techniques, baits choices, attraction options, deterrent products and differing active ingredients not readily available elsewhere.

Here are a couple of ways EcoSan’s Solutions differ from common methods used by other local pest controllers in Auckland.

Near immediate activating poison baits for rats and mice

Rats and mice after ingesting poisons can take three to five days to succumb to the effects of the poison. The reason behind this is safety. Using faster acting modes of action poisons would put the public and the pets at risk with incidental ingestion. Slower acting products are easy to reverse and allow plenty of time to do so.

However when considering also the time it takes for rodents to find the bait to consume and then the delay period for it to take effect, this time can seem quite long whilst the customer waits for results. During this period, rats continue to inhabit the building, chew electrical cables, water pipes, and construction material creating easier access for rodents visiting after this one has left and during this time this rat will continue to eat more poison which could be left for other rats or mice not yet controlled for no additional benefit as the rat would die soon anyway. Also these rats will continue to multiply causing a perpetual cycle.

EcoSan Solutions provide a service which works faster, helping to break the cycle more efficiently for little extra cost, using poison bait formulated with the same safety profile as other common poisons but faster acting.

How Ecosan Solution bait stations work more effectively?

EcoSan Solutions uses a variety of products as we choose the best, safest and most effective method for the specific task and property we are servicing, we are not bound by one product alone which allows greater flexibility, however we commonly use a product with a fresh mode of action which stop Rats and Mice activity much faster than common products. Although the same safety is acquired from a longer acting effect, the rodents become more sedentary very quickly after ingestion. Rats and mice no longer run around, eating, mating, chewing and harassing staff and family.  This effect, though simple can be a game change in gaining rapid control of rat and mouse populations and breaking breeding cycles.

A change in diet

Do you get bored eating the same thing daily, Rats and Mice occasionally like a change too, in fact studies have shown some rodents are no longer as interested in common poison baits since they smell and taste all similar, largely relying on the same group of savoury foods. This is particularly an issue where food completion exits such as fruit trees, animal and chicken feed.  Our product is different, catering for a different palette which rodents enjoy, contributing to a faster uptake of the poisons once introduced to the Rats and Mice.

A bonus in the safety aspect, our products have been shown to have a lower secondary poisoning risk. In the event that if a cat catches a rat or mouse which has recently eaten the poison, the transferal risk of the ingredients are very low.

Rodent repellent products

There are several products available in stores and online which promise to deter rats and mice. Most of these devices have temporary effect at best or simply don’t work.

Formulations available to EcoSan Solutions blended for natural plant and agricultural extractions with residual capabilities can with the appropriate tools to use inside of voids such as ceiling voids, subfloors, and exteriors of buildings which will deter rats and mice and other rodents from feeling comfortable around the treated area.

These products have been shown to have up to six month effective life in New Zealand conditions.

Well suited for situations where baiting and trapping need additional assistance to be fully effective and where the situation is challenging and complex or pest pressure is higher than usual or where poison baiting should be avoided.

These products of various strengths and applications are safe for people pets and the environment and a useful tool in overcoming otherwise difficult to resolve rodent issues.

Using Pulse Baiting to gain control of high populations of Rats faster

Professional pest controllers in Auckland usually offer a set and forget system where bait stations hosting poison baits usually or concealed traps inside. These will be installed in identified problem areas where the pestie concludes the rats or mice are walking (Tracking) or they may choose an overkill method where bait stations are installed around the perimeter of the site either in a single, dual or triple layer system.

Single layer perimeter

Bait stations are placed around the building foot print spaced out at 10-15 meter intervals.

The interval spacing can depend on the type of baits or traps used, as some products require closer intervals for best recommended efficiency. In audited sites such as MPI or food industry, these intervals are prescriptive and should be followed.

Dual layer perimeter

Bait stations are placed around the property outer perimeter (often the fence line), and the second layer around the building foot print spaced out at 10-15 meter intervals.

Triple layer perimeter

Bait stations are placed around the property outer perimeter (often the fence line), and the second layer around the building foot print spaced out at 10-15 meter intervals. The triple layer includes an internal perimeter around the interior of the perimeter as a final last resort catch all. The interior units are often poison baits with a mix of kill traps or in the food industry may use non-toxic baits and kill or isolation traps.

In most residential situations where pest pressure is not very high a single layer may be sufficient.

The overkill system is a standard operating practice internationally and works on the basis the poison baits or mechanical trapping ability outweighing rodent numbers. Similar to overwhelming firepower.

Pulse baiting works the same but different

Pulse baiting is a more modern and more sophisticated method using the timing or servicing of bait stations and the initial bait load tactically to overcome issues with over consumption of rodent control baits and over use of baits leading to waste.

Pulse baiting considers the alpha male hierarchy of rats and also the time delay in the resulting kill following poison bait ingestion.

Studies show dominant rats which make up a minority of the overall rat clan numbers will usually get first uptake on feed so alpha rats will be the first to eat the available poison baits leaving other rats in the clan with less or no bait poison to consume. Alpha rats tend to be greedy and will gorge themselves eating much more than required for satisfaction and a subsequent kill. This leads to both bait wastage so an additional cost of service but also deprives other clan members of poison leaving the other remaining rats to continue uncontrolled and multiplying.

Pulse baiting works but initially introducing (loading) less poison baits and servicing, monitoring and replenishing poison baits more regularly, checking rodent control bait stations every 3 – 7 days as opposed to the every four weeks with the overkill method.

The 3 to 7 day intervals following initial ingestion by alpha male rats allow time for these rats to succumb to the active ingredients allowing other clan members a chance to feed. This method has been shown to reduce rat and mouse number significantly faster than the traditional overkill approach.

The pulse method is more labour intensive, but is much more effective initially at reducing populations where rodent numbers are high in the treatment area.

Rats Don’t Become a Problem Overnight…

Every rat you hear in your ceiling today is the result of weeks or even months of successful breeding, feeding and sheltering somewhere nearby.

The unfortunate reality is that rodents rarely disappear on their own. Left untreated, a single breeding pair can rapidly establish a much larger population, increasing the risk of property damage, contamination, unpleasant odours and costly repairs.

The good news is that effective rodent control isn’t simply about killing rats—it is about understanding their behaviour, interrupting their breeding cycle, removing the conditions that attract them and staying one step ahead.

Whether you’re protecting your family home, rental property or commercial premises, acting early almost always costs less than waiting until the infestation becomes obvious.

If you’ve started hearing scratching, chewing or movement in your ceiling, walls or under your floor, the rats have already made themselves comfortable. The question isn’t whether they’ll leave on their own—the question is how much damage they’ll cause before they’re removed.

EcoSan Solutions specialises in practical, science-based rodent management designed for Auckland conditions, helping homeowners and businesses protect what matters most.
