Here is a brief article on controlling cockroaches in Auckland the simple way. As a professional pest control technician, I am often tasked with exterminating cockroaches from homes and office spaces. I will outline the easiest and most effective way to eradicate these creepy crawlies from your home or work environment.

Not to say the reader can not be the master of their own insect destroying mission, but because normally, a professional is more effective, faster to achieve results and there is the assurance it is not just trial and error as it has all been done before, we know our methods work.

Insect identification

Before discussing the best method of cockroach anilalation, we should identify the correct target. Cockroaches come in different varieties and styles. Now we could go into detail about different species, latin names, and origins, but generally this is not essential for getting control of these insects when they invade our home and workplaces. So let’s break it up into two boxes;

• Outdoor roaches AKA Garden Roach
• Indoor Roaches

Outdoor / Garden Cockroach

These types generally reside outdoors and although I have seen it happen, these are rarely found nesting inside a home or building. They tend to prefer outdoor conditions. They do quite commonly rest under buildings in subfloors, around exterior windows and doors, between weatherboards and around guttering. This is because human buildings can provide shelter from the cold or direct sunlight.

It’s these roaches that we are mainly concerned about, the ones seeking shelter or nesting closer to the home. They will be the ones most likely to enter inside through an open door or window, or scurrying around when starting the BBQ or using outdoor furniture. We are not trying to wipe out all the cockroaches in NZ, just the ones disturbing our peace in our environment in which they trespass from time to time.

These roaches are commonly Gisborne, Oriental, American or New Zealand Native.

Indoor Cockroach

The German roach is very common in Auckland and found in homes and office spaces. Research suggests these roaches are found primarily inside human buildings to the point some scientists say, they reside nowhere else and are found only nesting close to humans. Often found nesting in or close to kitchens and hot water cupboards. It is very common for these roaches to be found in corporate and workplace kitchens. They can be easily imported with food deliveries or by staff. They will nest close to warmth and a food source, making kitchen appliances ideal. These roaches are a bit gross, since they tend to camp out where us humans prepare our food and sneaky too, often showing up when the lights turn out so as to be less disturbed while they traverse the kitchen appliances.

Simple treatments that get real results – Outdoor Cockroaches

When it comes to outdoor cockroaches, the easiest and most effective approach is to apply an insecticide barrier around the exterior of the building—especially in areas where roaches are likely to forage or nest. This treatment targets existing cockroaches living around the property and leaves behind a protective barrier. Any new cockroaches that come too close are exposed to the residual product and eliminated before they have a chance to multiply or settle in.
External treatments typically involve spraying a long-lasting insecticide around the base of the building, near doors and windows, in garden beds, and under decks or pergolas—anywhere cockroaches may be hiding or moving through.

Some pest control companies focus on spraying indoors because that’s where people see the cockroaches and feel most uncomfortable. But indoor spraying doesn’t get to the root of the problem when dealing with outdoor or “garden” cockroaches. Exterior treatments are often more effective, less disruptive, and safer. There’s no need to clear out furniture or leave the house—and really, why spray chemicals inside if the problem is coming from outside?

A smarter, safer way to deal with German cockroaches

Killing these creepy crawlies—especially the ones hiding in your kitchen—is easier than most people think, as long as it’s done the right way. If not, the problem can drag on for weeks, or the roaches might disappear for a while only to come back later.
Here’s how we handle it: we apply a targeted insecticide treatment around key areas of the kitchen, especially around appliances like the dishwasher, fridge, oven, and even small units like the air fryer. We also focus on hard-to-reach cabinet voids—these are favourite hiding spots for German cockroaches, since they’re dark, warm, and rarely disturbed.

The product we use is a low-toxicity residual insecticide, which is ideal for homes with kids or pets. It’s also a safer option around food prep areas. Despite being lower in toxicity, it’s actually more effective against German cockroaches than many conventional, older chemicals still used by some operators.

What really makes this approach stand out is how convenient it is. Many pest control companies recommend gel baiting for German roaches. While gels can be effective, they often require multiple visits, take longer to show results, and lose their effectiveness quickly. Since gels rely on scent and taste to attract cockroaches, they degrade fast—especially in a busy kitchen environment.
